Christmas Celebration

Christmas time is the most wonderful time of the year! This year was extra special for the students of room 23. We were fortunate enough to have Mr. Bankson (a cabinet maker) come in and help the students build picture frames for their parents. We had a wonderful time, and the students learned some wood-working skills. Our last day before break was filled with pizza, cookies, cupcake, cinnamon rolls, and all kinds of goodies. We finished the day with a very exciting gift exchange. Thank to all parents and students for making it a memorable time. Be sure to check out the pictures; there are some great ones. You will also find pictures from our school's Christmas program. Click here for more photos.

Gingerbread Creations: Day 1

As the holiday season is approaching, what better way to celebrate it than to build a gingerbread house from scratch! Mr. Ross supplied the foundational elements and the students brought in their own decorations based on the design of their house. They look absolutely wonderful after day 1! We will finish them soon; they will be judged by Mr. Skinner!

Advertisements

As a higher level thinking activity, Mr. Ross asked the students to take an ordinary item (like a harmonica) and create an alternate use for it. The students did a wonderful job creating some fun advertisements and some pretty interesting uses for ordinary things. These activities are exciting, engaging, and spark creativity.

Red Ribbon Week

The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to promote the awareness of the consequences of drug use. We watched videos that featured recording artists who don't use drugs. We also participated in spirit week. Each day had a theme and the students dressed to the theme. Be sure to check out more photos.

Ancient Egypt: Sarcophagus

As we are studying the intricacies of Ancient Egypt, one can admit that it is always fun to experience things for oneself. So, the burial practices of the Egyptians provide a great foundation for exploration. Therefore, we are creating our own tomb/sarcophagus out of a shoe box. Students will create a tomb, decorate it with a cartouche, create life scenes on the walls, and place what they want to bring with them to the afterlife inside. Students will then create a clay modeled sarcophagus to be placed in their shoe box tomb. Cheap, creative, and entertaining! :)

Plate Tectonics and The Egg!

Our current science chapter is "Plate Tectonics and the Earth's Structure". We have been learning about the layers of the earth, the idea that the crust is broken up into plates, and the idea that those plates are moving very slowly. So, in order for students to get a grasp on this information we conducted an Egg Lab. Students used a hard-boiled egg to find correlations between the earth and the egg. It is a great lab with a tasty treat at the end (if you like hard-boiled eggs).

Technology Can Sure Be Wierd!

The students of room 23 decided to end their time in the computer lab with a program called "PhotoBooth". This program takes a picture of the user, however one can add crazy filters to make one's picture very interesting. So, the example you see is of me (Mr. Ross). Don't worry there are many more crazy pictures!! Enjoy! Click here for more photos.

The World's First System of Writing

Mesopotamia, acclaimed as one of the first civilizations as well as for creating one of the first systems of writing. It is known as the "land of firsts"! Their writing system is called cuneiform. One of our novelty activities was to become ancient scribes and create messages on clay tablets. It is hands-on, messy, and an engaging activity. Thank you parents for your donations, so that this was possible!

Bugs, Bugs, Ohh, We Love Bugs!

One of our parents was kind enough to bring in some insect specimens! He shared with us his passion for science, as well as his knowledge about species classification. The students had a wonderful time, and we even had some screams as we passed around the live specimens.

Thanks again to the wonderful parents of room 23. Click here to see more bug photos!!!

Week 3, Out with a Bang!

After working hard and taking tests most of the morning, the students of room 23 were able to take a break. Thanks to one of our parents, we were able to enjoy the most wonderful cinnamon rolls you will ever taste. Overall we have had a great three weeks! Remind your student to keep working hard, and to come to school ready to learn. Thank you, parents, for all your support.

Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment

Dear Families,
One of my favorite experiments of the year is Diet Coke and Mentos. I use this experiment to teach the scientific method. We walk through each step using this exciting experiment as our example. Please check out the video and the photos. Have a great weekend!
